Pamoja TrainingFounded in 2010, Pamoja describes itself as a for-profit social enterprise working in the field of rural decentralized renewable-energy solutions. They aim to address some of the most pressing energy needs for rural people in East Africa using a Base of the Pyramid (BoP) strategy that tries to empower grass roots solutions to improve the lives of those living at the base of the economic pyramid.

Uganda TrainingBeginning with this project in a rural area near Kampala, Uganda, Pamoja is using a Power Pallet gasifying corncobs as an anchor to develop a variety of energy services. Building a hybrid system to integrate a solar PV array and batteries with its PP20, they hope to establish a vibrant commercial sector in a village hub where local entrepreneurs can use the electricity to develop a variety of agro-processing businesses and community services. The project, supported by the World Bank- Millennium Science Initiative and the Swedish international Development Agency – Innovations Against Poverty, has set up a micro-grid in Tiribogo Village which is servicing more than 70 out of 105 households in the area as well as a cell phone tower, and several small businesses.

Pamoja is developing other novel approaches such as a mobile mini-grid to extend the life-changing access to electricity beyond the reach of the stationary grid. Local women micro-entrepreneurs run businesses such as a battery recharging service and electric lantern rentals made possible by the availability of the Power Pallet’s renewable, affordable, and on-demand power. APL believes deeply in empowering entrepreneurship among local peoples as a sustainable path to development, and will continue to work with Pamoja to increase the scope of their operations.
