Project Manager for Chartainer/Powertainer

Department: Engineering & Product Development
Reports to: Chartainer/Powertainer Engineering Lead and COO
Status: Full Time Employment

The Project Manager Chartainer/Powertainer position is an opportunity to manage the creation of our new shipping-container-scale Biochar and CHP product line. The development process is funded by the California Energy Commission and will be a high-visibility demonstration project for solutions to the Sierra forestry crisis. Our solution converts this woody waste problem into useful electricity, heat, and biochar, with the biochar entered into soil for carbon sequestration and improved plant productivity.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Understand grant deliverables including objectives, policy requirements, scope of work, APL team, external grant partners, grant schedule and budgets.
  • Create and maintain control documents and meeting processes to manage schedules, deliverables, and grant reporting.
  • Drive the internal assessment of project status and strategy to overcome obstacles and complete project successfully.
  • Drive cadence of physical hardware building and assembly integration into a shipping container. Will include daily standup meetings, weekly reports and status updates, etc.

Senior Mechanical Engineer

The Senior Mechanical Engineer must be a result-oriented, creative, problem-solving individual interested in maturing emerging concepts into practical, deployed solutions by managing mechanical engineering and engineers across APL product lines including Power Pallet, Powertainer, and Chartainer.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Converting concepts into comprehensive, detailed, practical solutions.
  • Mentoring other mechanical engineers.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners to analyze problems and downselect solutions.
  • Task Management
    • Balance engineering task priorities across product platforms.
    • Identify resources required to resolve engineering problems.

Manufacturing Engineer

Department: Engineering & Product Development
Reports to: Engineering Lead and COO
Status: Full Time Employment

The Manufacturing Engineer must be a results-oriented individual able to support activities within the manufacturing group to successfully bring both existing and New Product Introductions (NPI) to states that are ready for scaled production.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Interface to Engineering department for representing manufacturing and supply chain concerns.
  • Lead activities to close Manufacturing Change Orders.
  • Create, review, and approve production process documentation including drawings, SOPs, test protocol.
  • Generate documentation and product change information for both existing products and NPI, in addition to supporting sustaining documentation for rapid development cycles.
  • Management of documentation in Arena BOM control.
  • Review manufacturing data pertaining to quality, productivity, and costs, recommending improvements.
  • Develop manufacturing processes and enhance internal manufacturing systems for a successful ramping-up of production. Resolve technical issues related to manufacturing processes that affect customer quality, manufacturing capacity, and productivity.
  • Drive continual improvements for reducing manufacturing costs and lead times, while improving quality in order to meet product objectives.
  • Qualify suppliers and support the improvement of the supply chain ecosystem. Interface with a local and international supply chain. Research components and generate a variety of options and alternatives.
  • Work across boundaries of departments and disciplines to gather information needed to understand manufacturing and engineering problems, leverage knowledge, and empower teams in problem-solving activities.


  • Minimum: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Preferred: 5 years working within product manufacturing with experience critically addressing initiatives over cost, quality, and lead time.
  • Comprehensive understanding of product design, assembly manufacturing, lean manufacturing, machining, and sheet metal fabrication processes for both low & high-volume manufacturing.
  • Excellent self-management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong skills in engineering fundamentals, program management, and problem solving.
  • Experience with CAD Modeling, including 3D assemblies, components, and drawings, as well as the development of Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Expert proficiency with SolidWorks or CAD (3-5 years) preferred.
  • Knowledge of PLM management tools (Arena BOM control preferred).
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, as well as superior teamwork and collaboration.
